Blood Work

Many labs formulate their reference ranges using normal distribution, whereby the middle 95% of a healthy population’s results are considered ‘normal’, and the 2.5% on either end are classified as ‘abnormal’. This method provides benefit when people are acutely unwell, allowing for easy interpretation by creating clear cut-offs for disease.

While a ‘normal’ result may correspond to the absence of obvious disease,  it does not represent ideal physiology. These ranges lead to a reactive approach to healthcare; trends towards dysfunction are often overlooked until they cross the pathological threshold.

In the world of human performance, this method is even less effective. A new gold standard is required; if you compare yourself to the average, you will be average.

Reference Ranges that Matter

By comparing results from high-performing athletes and using research on the cutting edge of peak performance and longevity medicine, reference ranges can be formed that actually correlate with high-level results. Standard values are either ‘cut’, ‘compressed’ or ‘conveyed’ (or often a combination of all three) to reflect physiology, not statistics.

Compressed Ranges correct for biomarkers that operate within a sweet spot. Most blood tests fall into this category, whereby both the best performance and health are seen in this ‘Goldilocks zone’.

Cut ranges are used when either the upper or lower end of the normal range needs to be corrected e.g. many inflammatory markers want to be kept as low as possible, and most vitamin and minerals benefit from being kept as high as safely possible.

Conveyed ranges move the optimal target into the abnormal range, where performance benefits can be obtained at a potentially increased risk to health. The benefits vs. risks need to be weighed-up on an individual basis to decide what limits are prepared to be pushed.

Ryan is a GMC-registered medical doctor with a special interest in sports performance, blood work optimisation and longevity medicine. Since obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), he has worked in a number of medical specialities, including General Practice, Women’s Health and Emergency Medicine, amongst many others. 

Ryan’s background in medicine, along with his experience in natural bodybuilding, allows him to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This unique combination has equipped him with an extensive understanding of biomechanics, nutritional biochemistry, recovery physiology and pharmacology. 

What distinguishes Ryan the most from other coaches, is how he leverages performance analysis, such as advanced blood work interpretation, to help competitive bodybuilders excel in their sport. At the highest levels of competition, even the smallest details can make a significant impact.
